Induction Furnace Faraday Ring – Technical Specification 1. Description

The Faraday Ring is a conductive shielding component installed at the top and/or bottom of a coreless induction furnace coil. It is designed to control stray electromagnetic fields, minimize induced currents in surrounding metallic structures, and protect the furnace shell from overheating and electrical damage.

2. Function
  • Acts as an electromagnetic shield to contain leakage flux
  • Reduces stray eddy currents in furnace structure and shell
  • Prevents overheating of metallic components
  • Enhances electrical efficiency of the induction system
  • Improves operational safety and reduces electromagnetic interference
3. Construction & Material
  • Material: High Conductivity Copper (Electrolytic Grade)
  • Type: Solid ring or segmented (multi-piece) design
  • Cooling: Water-cooled (hollow copper sections with internal channels)
  • Surface Finish: Polished or anti-oxidation coated
  • Joints: Brazed or welded for leak-proof construction

The ring is designed to handle high induced currents and thermal loads during furnace operation.

4. Technical Specifications
ParameterSpecification
Material Grade ETP Copper (≥ 99.9% purity)
Electrical Conductivity ≥ 58 MS/m
Cooling Type Water-cooled
Operating Temperature Up to 200–300°C (surface)
Water Pressure 0.2 – 0.4 MPa
Flow Rate As per design (typically 5–15 L/min)
Ring Diameter As per furnace coil size
Wall Thickness 5 mm to 20 mm
Configuration Single or multiple rings
5. Working Principle

The Faraday Ring intercepts and redistributes stray magnetic fields generated by the induction coil. By providing a controlled conductive path, it prevents unwanted current induction in the furnace shell and nearby structures, thereby reducing energy losses and localized heating.

6. Cooling Requirements
  • Continuous water circulation is mandatory
  • Inlet Water Temperature: ≤ 35°C
  • Outlet Water Temperature: ≤ 55°C
  • Clean, low-conductivity water recommended
  • Proper flow monitoring to avoid overheating
7. Advantages
  • Reduces stray losses and improves energy efficiency
  • Protects furnace shell and structural components
  • Minimizes electromagnetic interference
  • Enhances coil life and system reliability
  • Suitable for continuous heavy-duty operation
8. Installation
  • Installed at top and/or bottom of induction coil
  • Proper insulation from coil and structure required
  • Secure mounting with non-magnetic supports
  • Leak testing required before commissioning
9. Maintenance
  • Regular inspection for water leakage and scaling
  • Check electrical connections and joints
  • Ensure proper water flow and temperature control
  • Periodic cleaning to maintain cooling efficiency
10. Applications
  • Coreless induction melting furnaces
  • Medium frequency induction systems
  • Steel, iron, and non-ferrous melting units
11. Standards
  • IEC guidelines for induction furnace components
  • ASTM B152 (Copper material standard)
